On October 10, 2024, our Finance and Economics class had the incredible opportunity to host Todd Hirsch, a renowned economist and former Chief Economist for ATB Financial. With nearly two decades of experience guiding Albertans through the complexities of the economy, Todd brought a wealth of knowledge to our classroom for a captivating 90-minute session. Todd kicked off the discussion by presenting his own career path to becoming an economist, focusing on how career paths are not always linear. This was a great lesson for many of our 11s and 12s as they begin, or are currently in, the process of choosing carers and universities. He connected this path with painting a vivid picture of Alberta's current economic state, which is important when considering careers. He discussed Alberta's resilience, particularly in the face of fluctuating oil prices and global economic shifts (including climate change).
He further encouraged SHS students to think about their careers throughout his talk, all the while giving economic insights that sparked a lively discussion about those potential career paths in economics and finance and beyond, and how students can prepare for an evolving job market. The highlight of the session was undoubtedly the Q&A period scattered throughout his talk. Students posed thoughtful questions. Todd's approachable demeanor made it easy for everyone to engage, and his answers were filled with practical advice and encouragement. As the session wrapped up, we were left feeling inspired and more informed about the economic challenges and opportunities ahead. We’re incredibly grateful to Todd Hirsch for taking the time to share his expertise with us. His visit not only enriched our understanding of Alberta’s economy but also motivated us to consider our roles in shaping the future.

Having an incredibly knowledgeable economist presenter talk to the class today was a truly informative and eye-opening experience. Not only was it fascinating that he was able to answer every question, but it was an occurrence like no other, as it allowed us to take away details and facts that would be incredibly useful and relevant for our futures. He gave us insight on what to look out for, how to manage our money responsibly, and why it is important to understand the basics of economics in everyday life. I can now confidently say that I am more aware and will make financially smart decisions in the future.
