The Magic of Giving

December can frequently be a time focused on consuming and getting things, whether it be black Friday or cyber Monday shopping, or thinking about things on our own “wish lists”. During this busy time of year, the Northwest Elementary staff and students chose to focus on the character virtue of compassion.

On Tuesday, Dec. 3rd, we kicked off “The Magic of Giving” with various “Giving Tuesday” activities. Each grade level chose a different way to give:

Kindergarten – collected books for Calgary Reads

Grade 1 -  collected towels for AARCS (Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society)

Grade 2 – wrote and gave out thank you cards to the community

Grade 3 – collected books to donate to a First Nations community

Grade 4 – collected socks and gloves for Inn from the Cold

“Giving Tuesday” also kicked off our collection of toiletries, clothing, and toys for the “The Magic of Christmas”. We were overwhelmed with the generosity of our community in contributing items. Thank you to Ryan, Rebecca, and Mike for bringing the ambulance to load up and then delivering everything to the Magic of Christmas warehouse. It was so fun to cheer on the grade 4 elves who helped load the ambulance.

Grade 4 students took on the extra challenge in December of doing 12 more days of giving. Each day, leading up to the break, they performed an act of kindness around the school. Some examples of their kind acts include: making bookmarks and hiding them in the library for students to find, telling jokes, volunteering at recess to help teachers, and reading to younger classes. Grade 2 students made announcements each week encouraging everyone to participate in various kindness challenges.

As we entered the winter break, our hope was that this spirit of kindness, compassion, and giving would continue through the break and into the new year.
