In a game that could have been scripted for the big screen, the North High School Phoenix secured their place in history last night, claiming the 2024-25 3A Boys Calgary Zone Championship with an electrifying 76-73 victory. The energy in the gym was nothing short of electric, as students, faculty, and staff packed the stands to witness an unforgettable battle on the court.

North High came out strong, building a solid 15-point lead in the first half. However, as any basketball fan knows, the game isn’t over until the final buzzer sounds. South High shifted the momentum and clawed their way back tying the game in the third quarter.  With sheer resilience, grit, and unwavering determination, both teams fought valiantly as the lead changes hands many times.  And in a heart-stopping finish, North High sunk a 3-pointer with 6 seconds remaining to seal the championship win.

In addition to the pride of North High qualifying for provincials, this game was extra special from an historical perspective as well. 15 years ago was the only other time that FFCA went to basketball provincials, but for that qualifying game, we had to rent the gym of a larger city high school as our facility was not sufficient to safely host the event. Last night, many staff who were in the stands 15 years ago, as well as hundreds of other staff, parents, alumni, and students got to witness a spectacular battle between two FFCA teams in a top quality facility owned by FFCA.  Hopefully it is only the first of many such experiences.

Adorned in their Zone gold medals, under the guidance of coaches Grewal, Karnash, and Chaudhary (alumnus), the North High Phoenix are now preparing for the next challenge of proudly representing FFCA when they travel to Fort McMurray to compete in the Provincial Championships March 20-22. Go Phoenix Go!
