Charter schools are tuition-free public schools that provide choice and innovation in education. Recognizing a need for enhanced learning options, Alberta Education established charter schools in 1994, making Alberta the first Canadian province to move forward on this exciting path. Alberta remains the only province in Canada with public charter schools. Each charter school is designed to implement a distinctive focus for their organization and delivery of education.
Charter schools:
- are tuition-free public schools
- are operated by non-profit organizations
- employ Alberta certified teachers
- are accessible to all students
- have no religious affiliation
- offer curriculum approved by Alberta
- are publicly accountable for their educational results and financial management as all other public, seperate, and Fracophone school boards PLUS have additional evaluation and reporting requirements
