Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal

FFCA proudly announces that three stellar educators have received one of Alberta's highest honours this year, the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal. The medal recognizes outstanding Albertans who have made significant contributions to their communities and the Province in honour of Her Majesty's 70th anniversary and service to Canada.

Teachers are critical to childhood development and success. FFCA is proud to have a roster of educators who commit themselves daily to building interesting, new and diverse learning experiences for our students.

"We are so pleased to have three of our educators recognized with this honour. The medal recipients, Elia Gindin, Rebecca Carruthers-Green and Sonia Sheehan, represent excellence in teaching and community building both within FFCA and with the broader Calgary community. FFCA is proud to be a part of Alberta's strong public education system, and educators are a cornerstone of that system," said Jeff Wilson, chair of the FFCA Board of Directors.

Elia Gindin is an educator at the South Middle School Campus and brings the social studies curriculum to life by engaging students in civic education experiences through inviting local elected officials to participate in assemblies and other classroom activities. Elia also contributes to expanding academic discourse and published a study on collaborative inquiry in LEARNing Landscapes last year.

Rebecca Carruthers-Green is an educator at FFCA's Southeast Elementary Campus and, in 2019, founded the annual Empathy PAWject for grade 4 students. The project focuses on empathy and humane education through expressive art by having students "adopt" dogs through local shelters. Greeting cards made by the students are then sold, with proceeds returning back to the Cochrane Humane Society.

Sonia Sheehan is a physical education (PE) teacher at the Southwest Elementary Campus and presently serves as the Vice President of Communications for the Health and Physical Education Council of Alberta. Sonia has consistently worked to improve Alberta's PE profession, including organizing the annual PE Summer Symposium and contributing to research and development in the field with the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University.

FFCA is proud of our educators' contributions to students' lives and the betterment of public education across Alberta. We once again congratulate these three recipients on receiving the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal.
